Variations, Heredity and Cell Division
Heredity & Variation
Heredity transfers traits (e.g., eye color) from parents to offspring via genes. Variation refers to differences among individuals of a species, caused by genetic mutations or environmental factors. Adaptations (e.g., camel humps, cactus spines) help organisms survive in their environment.
DNA & Cell Division
DNA—a double helix of nucleotides (A-T, C-G)—stores genetic instructions on chromosomes. Mitosis produces identical body cells for growth/repair. Meiosis creates gametes (sperm/egg) with half the chromosomes, ensuring genetic diversity in offspring. The zygote (fertilized egg) develops into a new organism.
